From 2003 to 2020, the Arthur O. & Clara M. Schlegel Memorial Fund of Berks County Community Foundation awarded almost 300 grants totaling more than $1 million in Berks County.
The Schlegel Fund provides grants to Berks County children who suffer from a diagnosed condition that creates a permanent structural or superficial deviation resulting in disfigurement and have a family that is unable to pay for treatment. Expenses that may be covered include direct and indirect medical expenses, such as travel costs associated with treatment.
To apply, click on “Apply for a Grant” under the “Scholarships + Grants” section of the website menu.
An example of a project that was funded were two lifts for Ethan Pyles, a Reading-area teenager, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which currently has no cure.
At a cost of $15,060, the Schlegel Fund paid for the lifts and for them to be installed to improve his quality of life.
