Grants available for programs that empower women and girls in Berks County

READING, PA (November 20, 2017) – Funding is available to programs that help break the cycle of poverty by eliminating or addressing barriers for Berks County girls or women who want to enter or re-enter the workforce or seek the education they need to do so.

These grants will come from the Power of the Purse in Berks County Fund. The Power of the Purse is made up of a group of local women who pool their donations to create a bigger impact than each member would make alone. Each year, group members review grant applications, visit nonprofits, and vote to determine which programs will receive grants.

Since the group began in 2012, it has awarded $145,243 in grants to local organizations.

Applications will be accepted until January 20. Click here to apply.

Last year, one of the grants funded the Reading Recreation Commission’s Girls Leadership Program, which teaches young women in urban environments to be leaders and gives them the tools to be healthy, successful members of society.

“When one of the girls tells you her favorite part of the program is helping others and paying it forward in her school and community, we know that we’re doing the right things,” said Daphne E. Klahr, the commission’s executive director. “It’s so gratifying that these girls see themselves as leaders and that they know they have the ability to make positive change happen. They will be the future Power of the Purse women, for sure.”
