Community Foundation fills new position to tackle health and human services issues

READING, PA (November 2, 2017) – Berks County Community Foundation has filled a new position of Health and Human Services Program Officer to manage the grant distribution process for a growing portfolio of charitable funds that promote public health and help those in need in the community.

Berks County native Monica Reyes will coordinate, among other things:

  • grants that address critical medical, social, or educational needs of area residents;
  • a communitywide initiative to improve oral healthcare;
  • and joint health and human services efforts with other organizations in the community.

Reyes will report to Heidi Williamson, Community Foundation vice president for programs and initiatives.

Prior to her employment with the foundation, Reyes worked for State Senator Judy Schwank’s office, where she specialized in health and human services issues, coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies. In this role, she participated in community boards and social change initiatives in Pennsylvania’s 11th senatorial district. Reyes also maintains a supervisory position with a national research company.

“My interest in philanthropy and helping others has been the driving force behind my career,” Reyes said.

She earned a Bachelor’s degree of arts in Political Science and a minor in French from Kutztown University. She is expected to receive a Master of Public Administration degree from West Chester University in December 2017.

As the moderator of the Berks County Task Force for Oral Health, Reyes will be filling a role previously held by Carole B. Snyder and Karen Miller, both of whom are senior fellows at the Community Foundation.

Snyder was formerly Reading’s Managing Director and Miller previously served as mayor of Reading.

The task force held its first meeting in 2014 and is composed of physicians, dentists, hospital and medical center administrators, dental hygienists, school nurses, and representatives of a variety of community organizations.
