Lucy M. Born Fund

When Lucy’s husband, James P. Born passed away, his estate was split between the fund that he established in his name and another fund, The Lucy M. Born Fund, that was created in honor of his wife. Both funds continue to make regular charitable donations, just as Jim and Lucy had wanted.

Grants support Berks Catholic High School, the Catholic Diocese of Allentown, Lifeline of Berks County Inc., and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (Memphis).

James P. Born, Sr. Fund

Before he passed, Jim worked with Berks County Community Foundation to establish The James. P. Born, Sr. Fund so he could easily make charitable donations, such as providing Christmas presents to children at Mary’s Shelter. When he passed away, his estate went to the fund in his name and to another fund, The Lucy M. Born Fund, in honor of his wife.

Jim was an active volunteer until not long before he passed away at age 91.

“If you’ve heard the maxim ‘The proper attitude is gratitude,’ you should know that this guy is the embodiment of that,” said Terry Dugan, business manager at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Whitfield.

Grants support organizations and ministries whose teachings are consistent with the Catholic faith and whose programs benefit children and/or promote education.

The Conrad Weiser Science Research Institute Fund provides unique opportunities and equipment for students at Conrad Weiser High School to further their study of science.

Conrad Weiser science teachers have been building up the district’s high school science program, giving students who are ready for a challenge the opportunity to explore their ideas and delve into high-level science projects.

They have students who are working on projects that are so unique that they are in talks with a patent attorney. They’re also engaging in research that is more commonly found at universities and cutting-edge companies.

The teachers allow students to follow their passions, come up with their own ideas to research, and then perfect their ideas.

Russell L. Hiller Charitable Trust Fund

The Russell L. Hiller Charitable Trust Fund of Berks County Community Foundation was established in December 2003. Judge Russell L. Hiller, a 60-year resident of Shillington, PA, passed away in May 2003 at the age of 97. Judge Hiller spent 26 years as a federal bankruptcy judge in Reading. Throughout his years in Shillington, he spent much of his time taking walks through the Shillington Borough park and relaxing on a bench that overlooked the Governor Mifflin schools. The pursuit of education was Hiller’s lifelong love. In his will, he established a scholarship fund to benefit Governor Mifflin High School students.

The fund will award five scholarships, each in the amount of $5,000, to graduating seniors of Governor Mifflin High School who have achieved high scholastic and personal development, and who have plans to continue their education at the college level, and who are in need of financial assistance beyond that which their parents can afford.

This fund also provides grants for the Borough of Shillington, Shillington Borough Library, and Albright College. Additionally, the fund supports a grant opportunity for programs benefitting the residents of the Governor Mifflin School District.
