Jan Millard Memorial Fund


The Jan Millard Memorial Fund is in memory of Jan Millard, a member of the Twin Valley High School Cross Country Team from 1991-1993. Although Jan was not one of the top runners, his leadership, commitment, and dedication contributed greatly to the success of the cross country team.

This fund will support college scholarships for seniors who participate in cross country and who live in the Twin Valley School District (the student may live in the district but outside of Berks County because the district boundary extends over the Berks County line). Applicants must be continuing their education after high school at a two- or four-year college, university or vocational school. The applicant must portray leadership, commitment, and unselfish dedication to his team.

Iris M. Balthaser Adam Scholarship Fund


The Iris M. Balthaser Adam Scholarship Fund was established at Berks County Community Foundation by her family in 2014 in memory of Iris, who passed away in 1991. Iris was a school teacher at Hamburg Area School District for 30 years.

This fund will provide scholarships to high school seniors who are graduating from a Berks County, Pennsylvania, school district who will be attending Kutztown University and majoring in Elementary Education. Preference will be given to seniors graduating from Hamburg Area High School; however, all applicants who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in order to apply, been active in school and/or community activities, or have held a work-related commitment, and have a financial need.

Dave McCanney Scholarship Fund


During the first part of David McCanney’s professional career, he was employed in the corporate lending and/or bankruptcy departments at American/Meridian Bank and Wilmington Trust Bank. Later, while working full time, he attended Widener University Law School in the evenings. Upon graduation, he joined Stevens & Lee/Griffin Financial Group in Reading, PA, where he worked until his death in April 2012.

While he enjoyed his professional career, his passion was to enrich children’s lives. He became involved with the Olivet Boys and Girls Club as a board member. He also was very involved in the Wilson Jr. Soccer Club in many capacities, serving as president and as a coach and a board member. For the final four years of David’s brief life, he was the Wilson High School Girls’ lacrosse coach. David loved spending his time coaching youth sports, playing soccer, and providing guidance to community organizations.

The fund will provide an annual scholarship to a female Wilson High School senior who played on Wilson High School’s lacrosse team in at least her junior and senior years and who is furthering her education after high school at a four-year college or university. The ideal recipient will be a student who, in addition to playing lacrosse, also participated in other school and community activities and was eager to accept a leadership role in those activities. The recipient will also be someone who sets goals for herself and works hard to achieve those goals.

In addition to the Wilson scholarship, up to two other scholarships will be awarded to students who attend Olivet Boys and Girls Club of Reading & Berks County on a regular basis and who will continue their education after high school. Olivet Boys & Girls Club will select the qualified recipients for this scholarship.

Snyder Family Scholarship Fund (Conrad Weiser)


This fund was established in 2015 in memory of Mary Jane Snyder and in honor of Roy Snyder. Mary Jane graduated from Alvernia College in 1975 at the age of 39. She went on to teach third grade at the Womelsdorf School in the Conrad Weiser School District for 27 years where she was a caring, creative, conscientious, highly respected, and much loved teacher.

A scholarship will be awarded to a senior graduating from Conrad Weiser High School who intends to major in education, with a preference for elementary education. Preference will also be given to applicants who plan to attend Alvernia University or Penn State University, however, all applicants who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply.

Haupt Family Fund


This fund awards two scholarships: one for Berks County residents pursuing a master’s degree in social work, and one for Berks County residents furthering their education in a mechanical technology field, automotive technology field, technical field, or trade, or a Wilson High School student majoring in engineering.

THE HAUPTS

This fund was established in 2016 by the three daughters of Marjorie and Wilbur Haupt to honor their parent’s memory. Marjorie Haupt was raised in New York City, graduated from Cornell University, and was employed by the County of Oswego, New York, as a social worker. Marjorie’s long career in social work focused on child welfare, children’s mental health, and children in the foster care system.

Wilbur was raised in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute and later from Cornell University. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and throughout the years was employed at Textile Machine Works, Sealright, Inc., and Martin Gillette, and owned and operated a Chrysler-Plymouth Dealership in Watkins Glen, NY.  Wilbur loved cars – old and new – and was a member of various car clubs in Michigan and Kansas.

While at Cornell, Marjorie met Wilbur and they married in 1948. Together they shared 66 years of marriage. They spent the latter part of their lives in Overland Park, Kansas. Wilbur passed away in 2014, and Marjorie passed away in 2016.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR MASTER’S IN SOCIAL WORK

One scholarship will be awarded in memory of Marjorie Haupt to Berks County residents who are pursuing a master’s degree in social work. Applicants must be in their final year of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in social work and plan to continue their education toward a master’s degree in social work, or have already obtained a bachelor’s degree in social work and are continuing their education toward a master’s degree in social work. Applicants may be furthering their education on a part-time or full-time basis.

In order to apply, applicants must have achieved a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or above.

Previous recipients of a scholarship from this fund may apply again in a subsequent year; however, previous recipients will not receive preferential treatment.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY FIELD, AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY FIELD, TECHNICAL FIELD, OR TRADE, OR A WILSON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT MAJORING IN ENGINEERING

One scholarship will be awarded in memory of Wilbur Haupt to adults who are Berks County residents who have a high school degree; OR to high school seniors who are graduating from a high school located in Berks County, PA (these applicants must be furthering their education in a mechanical technology field, transportation/automotive technology field, technical field, or construction field… *see below for examples of each area of study… on a part-time or full-time basis at a vocational/technical school located in Berks County, PA); OR to applicants who are Wilson High School seniors who intend to pursue a 4-year degree in engineering at any educational institution on a full-time basis. In order to apply, applicants must have achieved a cumulative high school or technical school GPA of 3.0 or above.

Previous recipients of a scholarship from this fund, with the exception of the Wilson 4-year engineering student, may apply again in a subsequent year; however, previous recipients will not receive preferential treatment.

The Christopher M. Stephen Memorial Altar Service Award Fund


The Christopher M. Stephen Memorial Altar Service Award Fund was established in 2017 and supports scholarships for one or more altar servers at St. Columbkill Catholic Church, Boyertown, Pennsylvania.  The award will be given to a high school senior who has served at least four years as an altar server.  The recipient shall serve during his or her senior year of high school and shall demonstrate punctuality, loyalty and reverence at the altar.  The recipient will be a person who is continuing his or her education beyond high school and who demonstrates financial need.

If in any given year there is no altar server who qualifies for an award under the preceding requirements, the Foundation shall make the distribution to the Church for use in the Church’s discretion in providing supplies, equipment, robes or activities for its altar servers.

The Christopher M. Stephen Memorial Altar Service Award Fund is not making distributions at this time.

Betty M. Moulder Elementary Education Scholarship Fund


The Betty M. Moulder Elementary Education Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 and transferred to Berks County Community Foundation for administration in 2017. Betty was a graduate of Buffalo Teachers College and got her Master’s degree in Elementary Education. Betty taught at the elementary level for 35 years, retiring from the Twin Valley School District in 1981.

This fund provides scholarships to seniors graduating from Twin Valley High School who will furthering their education after high school at a four-year college or university to major in elementary education (typically kindergarten through fifth/sixth grades), or early childhood education (typically birth through 3rd grade). Preference will be given to a student studying elementary education; however, all applicants who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have achieved a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in order to apply.

Gerald and Pauline Seiler Scholarship Fund


Gerald and Pauline Seiler established this fund at Berks County Community Foundation in 2017 to provide scholarships to students who graduate from Tulpehocken Senior High School. Pauline and Gerald have lived in the Tulpehocken Area School District for more than 60 years. Pauline taught for 25 years in the Tulpehocken Area School District, retiring from the Penn-Bernville Elementary School. Gerald taught Vocational Agriculture in the Tulpehocken Area School District from 1956 to 1968 and retired as Coordinator of Cooperative Education at the Lebanon County Vo-Tech School in 1989. Gerald also served two terms as a member of the Tulpehocken Area School District Board of Directors.

This fund provides scholarships to high school seniors who are graduating from Tulpehocken Senior High School who will be pursuing vocational education that does not require a bachelor’s degree, or to seniors who are graduating from Tulpehocken Senior High School who will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science or elementary education. Preference will be given to seniors who will be pursuing vocational education; however, all applicants who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have achieved a cumulative grade of 80% (2.5) or above in order to apply, been active in school and/or community activities, or have held a work-related commitment, and have a financial need.

Wallburga E. Weber Scholarship Fund


Wallburga E. “Wally” Weber received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Gettysburg College in 1963. Wally started her master of arts degree in teaching at New York University while working at Pfizer Laboratories in Brooklyn, NY. She began her cherished lifelong career as a science teacher at Brooklyn Friends School while she was completing the last two years of her master of arts degree in teaching. After the birth of her daughter, she became a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, working off and on as a tutor, teacher at RACC in the evening, and interim science teacher in the Wilson School District. In 1978, Wally began her 30-year span of teaching chemistry at Conrad Weiser High School. Beyond her classroom, she was dedicated to her students in countless ways, including serving as National Honor Society faculty advisor. Quite simply, Wally loved her students and was born to teach. Wally was also an avid traveler, gardener, and devoted grandmother. Wally passed away in 2013 at the age of 71. This fund was established by Wally’s family to honor her memory.

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to graduating seniors from Conrad Weiser High School who will be pursuing a degree to be a school teacher. Preference will be given to applicants who intend to teach in the field of science: biology, chemistry or physics; but all aspiring teachers are encouraged to apply.

In order to apply, applicants must have achieved a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or above. Recipients will be selected based on outstanding academic performance (especially in science classes); community involvement; and extracurricular and co-curricular activities during their high school years, giving preference to applicants who are members of the National Honor Society.

Barry and Deborah Weinhold Scholarship Fund


This fund was established in 2015 by Barry and Deborah Weinhold to provide scholarships to students graduating from Reading High School. Barry was an engineer and Deborah was a music teacher, and they both graduated from Reading High School.

The Barry and Deborah Weinhold Scholarship Fund is not making distributions at this time.
