Two New Members Elected to Board of Berks County Community Foundation

READING, PA (August 24, 2021) – Berks County Community Foundation welcomes two local business and community leaders to its board.

Elected were:

  • Michael J. Rowley, CPA/ABV, CVA, CFF, a Partner and Chairman of the Board at Herbein + Company, Inc.
  • Douglas F. Smith, Vice President and Commercial Loan Officer at Mid Penn Bank.

Rowley began his career at Herbein + Company in 1978. Before that, he spent three years at a national accounting firm. Rowley is Partner in Charge of the firm’s Management Advisory Services group, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, business valuations of closely-held businesses and litigation support engagements. Rowley has also assisted clients on succession planning matters. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a member and former chair of the Reading Chapter of Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and a member of the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. He serves on the boards of The Highlands at Wyomissing (treasurer), Muhlenberg School District Educational Foundation (treasurer), Berks County Workforce Development Board (former chair), and Berkshire Country Club (former treasurer), and as a member of the Penn State Berks Business Advisory Council.

Michael J. Rowley

When Smith was appointed to his position at Mid Penn Bank in 2020, he brought 36 years of financial experience to the role, about half of which was spent as Vice President for Finance and Administration at Alvernia University. At Alvernia, Smith more than doubled the landholdings of the University and completed $125 million in construction projects. Before that, he served as CFO at TECT, Incorporated, and as Vice President, Corporate Banking at both First Valley Bank and Sovereign Bank. Smith serves on the board of AAA of Reading-Berks and is a member of the Investment Committee of Berks County Community Foundation. He previously served on the boards of Home Health Care Management Inc. (chair), Kidspeace Inc., March of Dimes WalkAmerica (chair), Gustav Oberlander Foundation (vice president/treasurer), and Children’s Home of Reading (vice-chair).

Douglas F. Smith

Berks County Community Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that serves as a civic leader for our region by developing, managing and distributing charitable funds aimed at improving the quality of life in Berks County.

The Community Foundation manages about 360 charitable funds. Each year, those funds distribute scholarships and grants to support local students and assist a variety of nonprofit organizations and causes. Since 1994, the Community Foundation has awarded almost $70 million in grants and scholarships. More information is available at www.bccf.org.
